Three-day-old germinating embryos of Zea mays were incubated with [8-¹⁴C]adenine for 8 and 24 h. Use of high performance liquid and thin layer chromatography provided evidence for the incorporation of adenine by isolated germinating embryos into trans-zeatin. These results are at variance with similar labelling studies and possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.
