Abstract

The genus Vinca of the family Apocynaceae is well reported for producing biologically active indole bases, but very little work has been carried out on the chemical constituents of Vinca pusilla, a medicinally valuable plant distributed throughout parts of India. This paper reports the isolation of a new minor indole alkaloid, designated vincapusine (1), from both the roots and leaves of V. pusilla. Vincapusine has the molecular formula C₂₁H₂₄N₂O₃ (m/e 368.1746). Spectral analyses (UV, IR, ¹H NMR, MS) revealed it contains an indolic chromophore, tetrahydro-β-carboline moiety, carbomethoxy group, hydroxyl group, ethyl group, and cis-quinolizidine ring system, consistent with its structure as a new eburnamine type indole alkaloid.
