This report is a review of the literature of marine natural product chemistry for 1992 and is the tenth in a series of reviews published in Natural Product Reports (earlier reports cover 1977–December 1991). The format follows previous reviews, concentrating on novel marine natural products with interesting biological and pharmaceutical properties. Biochemical studies involving marine organisms, reports of primary metabolites, research on the biosynthesis of marine natural products, patent literature, and conference abstracts are omitted. Where possible, the biological and pharmacological properties of new marine natural products are included, but papers detailing pharmacological studies are excluded. In synthetic organic chemistry, reports of total synthesis of marine natural products or close analogues are included, but methodology-directed papers are not covered. Several 1992 reviews are noted, including on the synthesis of marine natural products (terpenoids and non-terpenoids), cembranoids from coelenterates, the chemistry and chemical ecology of octacorals, ecological roles of marine natural products, naturally occurring organohalogen compounds, and phospholipase A2 inhibitors from marine organisms.
