Abstract

An extract of the whole plant of Gelsemium elegans (Loganiaceae) has afforded gelsamydine (l), a novel oxindole alkaloid whose structure and stereochemistry were deduced by spectral and X-ray crystallographic analyses. Gelsamydine (1) represents a new class of indole alkaloid containing two monoterpene units.
