Changed betaxanthin pattern in violet flowers of Portulaca grandiflora after the feeding of DOPA

Abstract

The administration of DOPA to violet flowers of Portulaca grandipora led to the biosynthesis of betaxanthins not present in untreated plant material. Among them vulgaxanthin II but no dopaxanthin could be identified. DOPA serves as a precursor of the dihydropyridine moiety of the new betaxanthins. Its role as an elicitor of betaxanthin biosynthesis is discussed.
