Abstract

In 1964 Shellard and Phillipson reported the isolation of rotundifoline, isorotundifoline, rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline from the leaves of Mitragyna parvifolia (Roxb.) Korth. obtained from the Kerala State of India. We have recently examined the leaves of the same species obtained from the Maharashtra State of India and find an entirely different alkaloidal pattern. The alkaloids we have now isolated are the indole alkaloid akuammigine and the oxindole alkaloids pteropodine, isopteropodine, speciophylline and a further isomer of these alkaloids which we consider to be identical with the alkaloid recently discussed by Beecham, Hart, Johns and Lamberton (1967) under the name Uncarine F. Johns and Lamberton (1966) had earlier referred to speciophylline, originally isolated from the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa Korth. by Beckett, Shellard, Phillipson and Lee (1966) as Uncarine D and in the paper by Beecham et al. (1967) pteropodine, isopteropodine and speciophylline are referred to as Uncarines C, E and D respectively. With the exception of speciophylline none of these alkaloids had previously been isolated from species of Mitragyna. Pteropodine and isopteropodine were recently reported as new alkaloids, isolated from Uncaria pteropoda Miq. by Yeoh, Chan and Morsingh (1966) while the isolation of Uncarine F from plant material has not previously been reported.
