From Senecio vernalis four pyrrolizidine alcaloids were isolated. Three turned out to be the previoulsy described senecinine, senkirkine and retrorsine. Spectroscopic investigations showed the structure of the fourth compound to be 5-hydroxy-3.4-dimethyl-hex-1-en-2.5dicarbonyl-retronecine (senecivernine). Using gaschromatography the quantitative ratio of the 4 alcaloids in S. vernalis was measured.
