The researches on this plant led to the isolation of a number of crystalline principles one of which is provisionally named as Hayatin. Its methiodide has been found to be a muscle relaxant. Compared to d-tubocurarine chloride, the pharmacological activities of hayatin methiodide are almost similar except in degree. Fall of blood pressure, respiratory depression, ganglion blocking action, histamine liberation - all appear to be less marked in case of hayatin methiodide than those of d-tubocurarine chloride in equipotent doses. These observations on the pharmacological investigation of hayatin methiodide, showing it to be slightly more potent and less toxic than d-tubocurarine, offer the possibilities of utilising this substance as an indigenous substitute for d-tubocurarine chloride and other curariform drugs which are at present imported into the country.
