Abstract

Coelenterazine is known to be widely distributed in bioluminescent marine organisms, as a luciferin and as the functional group of photoproteins. The present data indicate that coelenterazine is also present in various non-bioluminescent marine organisms. In most of the non-bioluminescent organisms, coelenterazine is probably absorbed from ingested food.
