Abstract

Identified through a bioinformatics approach, a nonribosomal peptide synthetase gene cluster in Alcanivorax pacificus encodes the biosynthesis of the new siderophore pacifibactin. The structure of pacifibactin differs markedly from the bioinformatic prediction and contains four bidentate metal chelation sites, atypical for siderophores.
