Abstract

Betztlic acid and ceanothic acid have been obtained from the above ground parts of Zizyphus spina christi (Rhamnaceae). Their identity have been confirmed by comparison of their IR, NMR and MS spectra. The Zizyphus species (Rhamnaceae) are commonly used in folklore medicine for the cure of various ailments as reported by CHOPRA et al. (1956). Alkaloids, glycosides, betulinic acid etc. have been obtained by SINGH et al. (1965) from other Zizyphus species. AYNEHCHI and MAHOODIAN (1973) have obtained β-sitosterol, n-nonacosane, octacosanol, β-sitosterol-D-glucoside and a new ester octacosanyl behenate from Z.spina christi. TSCHESCHE et al. (1974) have obtained alkaloids from this plant. In the present communication the isolation of triterpenes, betulinic acid and ceanothic acid, have been reported from Z-spina christi. The identity of the compounds have been confirmed by comparison of their IR, NMR and MS data with the authentic data.
