Abstract

Circinamide (1), a novel papain inhibitor, was isolated from the cyanobacterium Anabaena circinalis Rabenhorst (NIES-41). Its structure has been determined by a combination of 2D NMR data and chemical degradation and confirmed by mass spectral analysis. The absolute stereochemistry of 1 was determined by GC and HPLC analyses of degradation products of 1. Circinamide (1) exhibited potent papain inhibitory activity with an IC50 of 0.4 μg/mL
