Abstract

Berberine is an important natural drug and a kind of benzyl isoquinoline alkaloid, which has unique four-ring structure. In recent years, pharmacological research has found berberine is expected to be used in the clinical treatment of cancer, diabetes and other frequently occurring diseases. Based on the Woodward's biosynthetic hypothesis, a schematic review on the synthetic studies towards berberine is provided. © 2021 Chinese Chemical Society & SIOC, CAS.
