Abstract

Among total infertility cases, the male factor accounts in 20 to 70% cases. As male infertility is a multifactorial syndrome, it is really difficult to diagnose and prescribe its treatment. Many western medicines have been developed to boost spermatozoa potential but, they have more side effects that could be a risk factor in the production of unhealthy offspring. Therefore, patients prefer to take herbal treatments and in Eastern countries where infertility is a sensitive issue, patients prefer to take traditional medicines than visiting physicians. In this study, we have systematically mentioned traditional herbal medicine which is referred from different cultures like India, Chinese, Iranian/Persian, Korean and African. These traditional practices have been practiced since ancient days and still have therapeutic values in male infertility. These traditional plants have beneficial effects on testicular and sperm dysfunction. The bioactive compounds like saponins, phytosterols, alkaloids, carotenoids present in the traditional medicinal plants have antioxidant, androgenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous and phlebotropics properties that restore testicular functions and improves sperm quality. Yet, studies conducted on traditional herbal medicine are few in numbers. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate more large scale, randomized clinical trials to illustrate the role of traditional herbs in male infertility management. © 2021 Scrivener Publishing LLC.
