Abstract

The leaves and roots of Linzia glabra are used as traditional medicines in central and southern Africa. This study is aimed at evaluating the pharmacological properties, phytochemstry and medicinal uses of L. glabra. Results of the current study are based on data derived from several online databases such as Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed and Science Direct, and pre-electronic sources such as scientific publications, books, dissertations, book chapters and journal articles. This study revealed that the aerial parts, leaves, roots and whole plant parts of L. glabra are widely used as abortifacient, and traditional medicine for respiratory infections, sores, wounds, diabetes, abdominal pains, burns, gonorrhea, syphilis and gastro-intestinal problems. Phytochemical compounds identified from the species include sesquiterpene lactones, alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, polyphenols, phytosterols, quinones, sapogenins, saponins, steroids, tannins and terpenoids. Ethnopharmacological research revealed that L. glabra extracts and phytochemical compounds isolated from the species have antibacterial, antifungal, anti-giardial, anti‐HIV and antihypertensive activities. Future research on L. glabra should focus on the possible biochemical mechanisms of both the crude extracts and identified phytochemical compounds including toxicological, in vivo and clinical studies to corroborate the traditional medicinal applications of the species. © RJPT All right reserved.
