A new alkaloid C34H37O5N5, only a very small quantity of which (0.5 to 1%)is present as an accompanying alkaloid of ergotamine, was found in ergot obtained from a variety of sources. The new ergot alkaloid, which was named ergostine, structurally falls midway between ergotamine and ergocristine. It differs from these two alkaloids only in the α‐hydroxy‐α‐amino acid radical, in as far as ergostine contains the α‐hydroxy‐α‐amino butyric acid radical. Copyright © 1964 Verlag GmbH & Co.
