The structure of a new dimeric indole alkaloid, arundarine, isolated from the roots of the plant Arundo donax L. (Poaceae) was determined. On the basis of spectroscopic data, arundarine was identified as 5-[3-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)indol-1-yl]-6-hydroxy-N-2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-beta-carboline.
