Abstract

A new alkaloid, pipermethystine, isolated from the leaves of Piper methysticum is shown to be 5-acetoxy-5,6-dihydro-1-(3-phenylpropanoyl)-2(1H)-pyridone (1) by PMR, CMR and mass spectrometry and by its conversion to phenylpropanoic acid and 5-acetoxy-5,6-dihydro-2-(1H)-pyridone (5). © 1979.
