Abstract

The seeds of Crinum moorei J. D. Hook, have been found to contain the alkaloids lycorine, crinamidine, powelline, crinine and 1-acetyllycorine. 1-Acetyllycorine had not been isolated previously from natural sources. The bulbs of Nerine bowdenii W. Wats, have been shown to contain at least sixteen alkaloids, four of which have not been reported to date. The method of isolation is described in detail, and the new alkaloids from both sources are characterized. One of the new alkaloids was identified as ( + Vepicrinine (III). The conversion of (+ )-epicrinine to (±)-crinane is reported. © 1960, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
