Abstract

Pachygone ovata (Menispermaceae) grows in the sandy sea shores of southern India, and its fruits are used as fish poison. Systematic fractionation of ethanolic extracts of the leaves, stems, and roots of the plant afforded five alkaloids: Common cartacterized as (4), religible (2), liriodenine (5), tribable (6), and coclaurine (7). In addition there was isolated a new amine oxide, religible (6), and coclaurine (7). In addition there was isolated a new amin vulsant actions, the profile closely resembling that reported with thebaine.
