SEDUM ALKALOIDS

Abstract

The polar alkaloids of S. acre have been reinvestigated by means of microreactions and mass spectrometry. Five of the eight compounds identified were not previously known in this plant. Four of these compounds contain a C₄- or a C₅-substituent on the piperidine ring. Sedum acre L. is a plant with a long tradition in European herbal medicine. NORDAL [1] summarised these traditions and conducted a pharmacological investigation into the effects of various extracts of this plant. He concluded that, apart from the antiscorbutic effect of fresh material, the pharmacological activity of the plant was largely associated with the alkaloid bases present. This activity consisted of local anaesthetic effects, skin irritation and indications of effectiveness against diphtheria.
