Crinum lugardiae N. E. Br. (Amaryllidaceae) is distributed in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana, with a voucher specimen deposited in the University of Natal Herbarium. No previous chemical investigation had been done on this species. Ethanolic extracts of its dried and powdered underground parts (bulbs and roots) yielded lycorine, crinine and hamayne, whose structures were determined by spectroscopic methods and comparison with authentic samples. These three alkaloids have been reported in other Crinum species and are known to be exclusive to the Amaryllidaceae family, and their presence in C. lugardiae is consistent with this finding.
