Glucosinolates in Seed of Swedish Brassica Crops

Abstract

Paper- and thin layer chromatography were used in studies on glucosinolates in seed of different Swedish varieties and lots of Brassica napus, B. campestris, and B. oleracea. There were no differences between lots in glucosinolate pattern and only small variations between varieties. 3-Butenylglucosinolate was generally the dominant isothiocyanate-yielding glucosinolate in B. napus and B. campestris. In these two species 5-methylsulphinylpentylglucosinolate was the most abundant glucosinolate yielding hydrophilic isothiocyanate. 2-Hydroxy-4-pentenylglucosinolate was found in seed of all the B. napus samples and in some samples of B. campestris. The results are compared with literature reports from studies of glucosinolates in seed and in vegetative parts of Brassica plants.
