Two new triterpenoid sapogenins have been isolated from the fruits of Barringtonia racemosa Roxb. The evidence suggested that one, barringtogenol, was 2 : 3 : 23 : 28-tetrahydroxyolean-12-ene (I; R = CH,*OH) and the other, barringtogenic acid, 2 : 3-dihydroxyolean-12-ene-23 : 28-dioic acid (I; R = C0,H). Confirmation was obtained by identifying the product of the reduction of arjunolic acid1 by lithium aluminium hydride with barringtogenol and with the product of similar reduction of barringtogenic acid.
