Abstract

Rhazimine is a selective PAF antagonist and an inhibitor of platelet arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism in vitro. Since multiple mediators such as PAF and AA metabolites are involved in the pathogenesis of allergic and inflammatory disorders, drugs affecting multiple mediators may be particularly effective. Inhibition of the NA cascade and PAF pathways by rhazimine could lead to additional beneficial anti-inflammatory and anti-PAF effects compared with classical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. From Melochia fomentosa roots, a new isatin alkaloid melosatin D and four known compounds (stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, β-sitosterol β-o-glucoside, octacosanol) were isolated. From Veratrum album rhizomes, a new steroidal compound 1-hydroxy-5,6-dihydrojervine was isolated, and the antihypertensive actions of jervinone, O-acetyljervine, and 1-hydroxy-5,6-dihydrojervine were described.
