Abstract

Rabelomycin, a new benz [a] anthraquinone antibiotic, has been isolated from fermentation broths of Streptomyces olivaceus ATCC 21,549. It is active against gram-positive microorganisms. Rabelomycin loses water easily when treated with acid. Structures I and III have been proposed for rabelomycin and its dehydration product, respectively. Rabelomycin is produced by a strain of Streptomyces olivaceus ATCC 21,549 isolated from a soil sample taken at Jean-Rabel, Haiti. Structure I has been assigned to rabelomycin on the basis of spectral and chemical studies.
