Two new pigments have been isolated from flowers of Lachnanthes tinctoria. N-(1-carboxy-2-methylbutyl) lachnanthopyridone is an oxygenated 9-phenylphenalenone with the nitrogen of an isoleucine group at position 5 of the ring system. 3,4-Dihydroxy-5-phenylnaphthalic anhydride, presumably derived from the in vivo oxidation of a 9-phenylphenalenone, has also been isolated. The synthesis of three 5-aza-9-phenylphenalenones is described.
