Abstract

A phytochemical investigation into the roots of Bauhinia championii (Leguminosae) has resulted in the isolation and spectral characterization of a new nitrile glucoside, bauhinin ([Z)-6β-[(β-D-glucosyloxy)-4β-methoxy-5α-hydroxy-2-cyclohexene-Δ'.α-acetonitrile), the structure of which was confirmed by the results of a single-crystal X-ray analysis of its dihydrate. Gallic acid was also isolated from the same source.
