Solanum species are very often applied in folk medicine (2). Although alkaloids and sapogenins from aerial parts and roots of Solanum plants proved in some cases to be different, roots have seldom been investigated phytochemically. The plants contained in Table 1 were grown in the field in Halle (harvest: September, voucher specimens retained in the Institute of Plant Biochemistry, Halle). The compounds of Table 1 have been identified by comparison with authentic samples from the author's laboratory or with literature values (5).
