Abstract

A new water-soluble iminosugar alkaloid, steviamine [(1R,2S,3R,5R,8aR)-3-(hydroxymethyl)-5-methyloctahydroindolizine-1,2-diol], was isolated from the leaf material of Stevia rebaudiana (Asteraceae) and the leaves and bulbs of Veltheimia capensis (Hyacinthaceae). This is the first report of an indolizidine iminosugar alkaloid from these two plant families. The structure of steviamine was determined using HRFABMS, NMR spectroscopic data (1H, 13C, COSY, HMBC), and X-ray crystallographic analysis. Steviamine may occur in some Stevia products and influence taste.
