The almost ripe fruits of Evodia rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth. (Rutaceae) are used in Korean folk medicine as an analgesic, antiemetic, astringent, and hypotensive agent (1). They have been examined previously for some chemical constituents (2—4) and pharmacological effects (5, 6). In this study we have isolated two quinolone alkaloids, evocarpine (1) and dihydroevocarpine (2), showing toxicity in the brine shrimp test (7) with LC50 values of 0.77 and 21.4 jig/mI, respectively. Berberine chloride (Sigma Chemical Co.) as a positive control exhibited a LC50 value of 27.2 jig/mI.
