A new plant constituent, N-methyl-5-carboxamide-2-pyridone (I) has been isolated and identified from Trewia nudiflora. This compound is a normal metabolite of nicotinic acid in mammals and has not previously been identified in plants. Biosynthesis of N-methyl-5-carboxamide-2-pyridone from nicotinic acid(-6-¹⁴C or -7-¹⁴C) and nicotinamide-7-¹⁴C was established.
