Abstract

Acne is a skin problem that troubles the sufferers because it could reduce confidence. One of the causes of acne is the growth of Propionibacterium acnes in the skin. Common acne medication is antibiotic, but it's starting to be abandoned because it could cause resistance. The purpose of the present study was to determine the inhibitory activity and bioactive compound of Noni leaves extract which could inhibit the growth of one of the bacteria which causes acne, i.e. Propionibacterium acne. Extraction was performed by maceration using 96% ethanol, then multilevel fractionation using n-hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate solvents. Antibacterial activity was measured by measuring MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% value and the formed inhibition zone. The bioactive compound was identified from the most active fraction by GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry). The research result showed that the lowest MIC value was chloroform fraction with 4% concentration and average inhibition zone of 24.13 mm. The chloroform fraction of Noni leaves extract contains a terpenoid group of squalene (13.32%), palmitic acid group of n-hexadecanoic acid (13.17%), pyridine-3-carboxamide, oxime, alkaloid group of n-(2-trifluoromethylphenyl) (8.05), and steroid group of beta-sitosterol (7.19%).
