Abstract

1. Seven alkaloids, including lycopodine and annotinine have been isolated from Lycopodium annotinum, var. acrifolium Fernald. The two bases named above are also present in the type species, L. annotinum L., but the other five are new and are not present in the type. The remaining six alkaloids present in the type are absent from the variety. Such differences are indicative of differences greater than varietal and it is suggested that specific rank be given to the plant. 2. The new alkaloids are acrifoline (L27) (C16H21O2N), alkaloid L28 (C17H27O2N), alkaloid L29 (C16H23O2N), alkaloid L30 (C16H25O2N) and alkaloid L31(C20H29O4N). 3. Preliminary work on the structure of annotinine has indicated that in addition to the lactone grouping, the third indifferent oxygen is present in a five or six membered ether bridge. © 1947, American Chemical Society.
