The oils of three different collections of Austromatthaea elegans L. S. Smith have been examined by GC and GC/MS. The leaf oils produced were either rich in benzyl benzoate (96.25%) or contained a mixture of benzyl salicylate and benzyl benzoate in the ratio of 43, these two compounds accounting for 90-97% of the oil. The oil yield varied from 0.3% to 1.8% based on fresh leaves. The remainder of the oil was composed of monoand sesquiterpenes, with (E)-p-ocimene (0.2-1.6%) being the major contributor.
