Abstract

Alkaloids have been isolated, in trace amounts only, from the whole stem and mature fruits of Monanthotaxis (Popowia) cauliflora (CHIPP) VERDC. From the stem four alkaloids, three aporphines and a tetrahydroprotoberberine, were obtained. Two of the three aporphines were identified as nuciferine and asimilobine and evidence is presented that the third is the apparently novel 9-hydroxy-1,2-dimethoxy-noraporphine. The tetrahydroprotoberberine was identified as stepholidine. The two alkaloids from the fruit were partially identified as a 1,2-substituted-9-methoxy-7-hydroxyaporphine and a dihydroxy-dimethoxy-noraporphine, probably laurelliptine.
