Abstract

Dioscorea dregeana (Dioscoreaceae), a southern African endemic wild yam and popular Zulu medicinal plant, was investigated for its chemical constituents. Tubers were sliced, dried, ground, and successively extracted with hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, and methanol using a Soxhlet apparatus. Isolated compounds included sitosterol, stigmasterol, dodecanosyl 3-[40 -hydroxy, 30 -methoxyphenyl]propenoate, 3,40 ,5-trihydroxybibenzyl, crinamine (an Amaryllidaceae alkaloid), and dioscorine. The finding of crinamine, an isoquinoline alkaloid previously thought unique to Amaryllidaceae, was unexpected. This is the first report of an isoquinoline alkaloid from the Dioscoreales.
