Alkaloidal constituents of the leaf and root of Magnolia obovata THUNB. (Japanese name "Hōnoki") (Magnoliaceae), collected in Ena district, Gifu Prefecture, were examined. The known four aporphine bases, liriodenine (II), anonaine (IV), glaucine (VIII), and asimilobine (IX), and two benzylisoquinoline bases, reticuline (XII) and magnocurarine (I) were isolated and characterized. In addition to these bases, a new secondary aporphine alkaloid, obovanine, was isolated and its structure (X) was determined from its spectral data.
