A previously unknown compound, identified as a 1,4-benzoxazinone derivative, was isolated from the roots of corn plants. By comparison with other known 1,4-benzoxazinones and the use of infrared, mass, nuclear magnetic resonance and ultraviolet spectrophotometry and synthetic procedures the newly discovered compound was identified as 2-(2-hydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one)-β-D-glucopyranoside.
