From the in vitro hairy-root cultures of Catharanthus trichophyllus have been isolated five new indole alkaloids, belonging to a new series of yohimbine type bases. Anthraserpine and dimethoxyanthraserpine have been found to contain the 11-methoxy-epiallo-yohimbine skeleton, esterified at C-18 with 2-acetamidobenzoic acid and 2-acetamido-4,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid, respectively. Their structures have been established by detailed spectral analysis. Isolated in trace amounts, three other congeners of the same series have been identified on the basis of their mass spectral data. © 1989.
