Abstract

Pycnarrhena australiana F. Muell. (Menispermaceae) occurs as a vine in drier rain forest areas of northern Queensland. All parts of the plant give strongly positive field tests for alkaloids, and extraction of whole plants, including roots, has given 0.8% of crude alkaloids. The alkaloids consist largely of bisbenzylisoquinolines, and two new alkaloids, 2-N-norberbamine (1) and 2-N-norobamegine (2), have been isolated, in addition to the known alkaloids berbamine (3) and isotetrandrine (4). The oxoaporphine alkaloid, liriodenine, was isolated in trace amounts and another minor base, C,,H,,NO,, of unknown structure has not been studied in detail. The occurrence of bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids in a related species Pycnarrhena manillensis has been reported previously.
