The isolation and structure of papaverrubine C (epiporphyroxine)

Abstract

The alkaloid papaverrubine C has been isolated from opium and Papaver Caucasicum Marsch.-Bieb. and shown to be identical with a stereoisomer of porphyroxine formed from the latter by acid catalysis. It is possibly an artefact formed during extraction. Alkaloids related to porphyroxine have also been isomerised under the same conditions.
