A new piperidinc alkaloid sndrachamine was isolated from the medicinal plant Andrauhnc aspera. Its structure was established by spectroscopic studies.The plant Andrachnc aspera Spreng (Euphorbiaceae) is a small undershrub, found commonly irl 1 arid planes of Sind and Baluchistan . It is reported to have medicinal importance in indigenous systcm of medicine specially for sore eyes and to improve eye The crude alkaloidal mixture is reported to possess biological and antibacterial activity in various biological assays. The plnnt is also described as a true substitute of Polygala senega in earlier literature5, although Ithis property was disputed later by another group .In the present communication we wish to report the isolation and structure elucidation of a new piperidine alkaloid andrachamine (Fig.1) from the above plant.
